Letters to Formby Times: 24/04/12

Shame on the fuel thieves

SO there is somebody out there who got away with stealing fuel from a Formby petrol station on a number of occasions before being apprehended (Formby Times, April 17).

It makes one wonder how long other criminals have been doing the same and if this goes some way to explaining why our fuel prices have been on a steady upward trajectory for the past four years. Clearly, we all pay for their crimes.

Their little faces

I MUST agree with your editorial piece about the treatment of family pets (Formby Times, April 17).

The work that the team carries out at Freshfields sanctuary to protect unwanted dogs, cats and other animals is exemplary and they have my full support.

I cannot comprehend how someone could throw a defenceless creature over the wall of a pet rescue centre purely because buying it had turned out to be the wrong decision.

I am sure they would not have treated the result of a surprise pregnancy so lightly. It is just a pity that abandoning animals in this way could not meet with more serious punishment at the hands of the law. A pet is just as much your dependent as a baby human is.

The little faces of the puppies featured in your article were so appealing that I’m sure it won’t be long before they go to more responsible homes.

Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a similar appeal to house unwanted pets appearing in Formby Times again within the month. A great shame.

Walk of Pride

I DID enjoy your images from Formby’s Walk of Witness.

I find it an event which shows the true meaning of Easter, away from the determination by chocolate manufacturers to sell eggs and for bunny rabbits to get some decent publicity.

The organisers excelled themselves this year and I thought the costumes were particularly good.

It must be difficult to act, especially such tragic scenes, in the unusual surroundings of a 21st century town while being watched by a crowd of people but all the actors carried off their roles with aplomb. Well done to all.

Well done Eleanor

I THOUGHT it was lovely to see young Eleanor to win an Olivier Award for her role in Matilda.

It is so refreshing to see a young talent like Eleanor’s being recognised. What makes it even more special is that this role did not come her way through a TV casting show where she had to impress the judges with a sob story or plead with them that this ‘was her dream’.

It just goes to show that talent will always shine through and we should be very proud of our little Formby superstar.

Golfing all day

AS a golfer who loves the game so much I have made it my career, I have often said I could play from sun up to sun down.

I’m now writing to ask local golfers to do just that.

The Four Course Classic will see teams of four golfers make the most of the longest day of the year on Friday, June 22 by taking on an epic challenge, teeing off at sunrise to play 72 holes in just 16 hours.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore four different courses of your choice while fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, the UK’s leading charity fighting against muscle-wasting conditions.
