SCIENTISTS believe they have solved the mystery of where painted lady butterflies go in winter - with the help of sightings from the public.Each year the insects arrive in the UK from North Africa and the Mediterranean, but what happened to the painted ladies in the winter remained a mystery, as there was very little evidence of them flying south in the autumn.But this year the public were able to register sightings online and reports came in of painted ladies heading out to sea towards the Continent. Richard Fox, Butterfly Conservation’s surveys manager, says: “Several of these lucky observers saw more than one butterfly head out on its perilous voyage. This is exactly the evidence needed to lay this enduring mystery to rest. Painted ladies do return southwards from Britain in the autumn enabling the species to continue its breeding cycle during the winter months.”
