AN EX-MERCHANT Taylor’s pupil has sung his way to the Big Apple with his acapella group Sons of Pitches.
Joe Hinds, who lives in Birkdale, but is currently away studying a degree in education at the University of Birmingham, is delighted that his vocal group are the only choir from the UK to have made it to the final of the International Championships of Collegiate Acapella.
Sons of Pitches are now aiming to raise nearly £7,000 so that they can fly out to New York City for the world’s biggest acapella competition on April 20.
Joe has been part of the group for two years. He said: “Acapella is just something that I have always been interested in, I am fascinated with the idea of making music with just voices.
The University of Birmingham choir will fly out to the USA on April 17 to have their 12-minute performance considered by a panel of five judges.
Joe has been co-running the group alongside other members and hopes that their song choices will win over the American judging panel.
He added: “We will be performing a mash-up of Eminem’s Lose Yourself and Justin Timberlake’s Cry me a River, a contemporary jazz version of Wonderwall and one of our member’s own compositions.
“We like to put our own spin on things but we have found it hard to rehearse over Easter as we have been spread about the country for the holiday.”
Having only formed in 2010, Sons of Pitches has enjoyed growing success, making it to the Midlands regional round of the Voice Festival UK University Championship in 2012 and 2013, with Joe receiving an award for Outstanding Choreography or Stagecraft in the London final.
Joe added: “Along with the rest of the group, I am really excited to represent UK acapella and I am looking forward to seeing what this experience has in store for us.”
