TRIBUTES have been paid to a former editor of the Formby Times who has passed away in Australia.
John O’Neill, who was better known as Pat, emigrated to Australia in 1969 after a period editing his home town paper in the 1950s.
He passed away on November 15, aged 85.
Mr O’Neill, who lived on School Lane, Formby, continued his career as a journalist following his move to Melbourne, where he lived happily with his wife, Frances, who passed away three years ago, and the couple’s six children.
His niece, Jill Jones, of Mount House Close, Formby, said: “Pat really loved Formby and he always kept in touch with what was going on in the area.
“Local history was a real passion of his and he was always researching his family tree.
“He still had lots of family in Formby and he was always online speaking to everyone and staying in touch.”
An online memorial page was set up for Mr O’Neill where many of his relatives also paid tribute to the former journalist.
One of his other nieces, Audrey Wilson, wrote: “To us, you were more than an uncle, you were that special family member who made each and every one of us and our extended families feel truly loved as we loved you.
“We will so miss those middle of the night telephone calls.”
Mr O’Neill’s funeral service will be held today at Bunurong Memorial Park, in Dandenong, Australia.
Donations can be made to the Cerebral Palsy League.
