A Southport charity has launched a £30,000 fundraising campaign

A SEFTON-based spinal injury charity has launched a vital £30,000 fundraising campaign – and is appealing for local business and well-wishers to sign up.

Spinal Unit Action Group (SUAG) – the supporting charity of Southport hospital’s spinal injury unit – needs the cash to carry out improvements to its Birkdale care home.

SUAG has teamed up with World Supersport Championship motorbike team Parkalgar Honda to arrange a scheme where businesses pledge a donation for every race point the team scores.

Bispham Road-based claims handling specialist Plantec Holdings is the first firm to sign up, committing £10 per point.

Managing director Lee Evans said: “If rider Eugene Laverty wins the championship and his team-mate Miguel Praia finishes in the top 10, they could score around 300 points.

“That would mean we would donate £3,000 to SUAG at the end of the race season.

“It only takes nine other businesses to step forward and commit the same and SUAG will hit its much needed target.

“Laverty won in Australia recently and Praia finished ninth, so we are off to a good start.”
