Divers in a charity underwater chess match at Formby Pool

DIVERS took to the deep end for an underwater game of chess.

The tournament, held at Formby Pool, is expected to raise hundreds of pounds for charity.

The event raised funds for Help for Heroes and Animals Asia foundations moon bear rescue appeal.

Seven divers took part, each taking it in turns to play chess in the deep end while adults and children enjoyed taster sessions in scuba diving.

Diving instructor Peter Lund, said: “It was a fantastic day and I would like to say a big thank you to the volunteers and the divers who helped make this event happen and to the staff at Formby Pool who have been so supportive.

“I am delighted to say that the chess board and the pieces stayed put even if one or two our novice divers found themselves floating off at intervals.

“The general feeling is that this is one event we should be looking to repeat as a way of supporting charities and encouraging people to take up scuba diving.”
