MP “saddened” by BNP European Election success

The BNP’s success has been publicly condemned by all mainstream parties but Mr Griffin attacked the "liberal elite which has built a dam, a wall of lies which has grown ever taller and ever thicker over the years to stop ordinary people protesting about the removal of their freedom.”

One in 19 voters in Sefton – 3,232 – cast a ballot for the BNP.

Prospective Lib Dem MP Richard Clein said he was “absolutely appalled, disgusted and depressed” by Mr Griffin’s election.

He said: “I do recognise people are disillusioned with politicians and the political process and saw this election as an opportunity to vent their anger against the Labour government.

“In Sefton they came sixth in the poll and I believe their politics of hate and bile will be firmly rejected at the general election.”

In the North West, the Conservatives received 25.4% of the poll, followed by Labour with 20.39%. UKIP took third place with 15.75% of the vote, the Lib-Dems were fourth with 14.1%, and the BNP fifth with 7.95%.

Tory parliamentary candidate Cllr Debi Jones said: “The BNP has cleverly sold a sanitised agenda to the public. People don’t know what they have voted for. If they looked closely at what the BNP stand for and the background of their leaders, they would be horrified.”

Before the results Labour had three MEPs, the Conservatives three, Liberal Democrats one, and UKIP one.
