AN artist from Formby has won an international painting prize.
Phyl Jones won the award from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
The 65-year-old is a regional winner in the charity’s Design a Calendar competition, which was open to people of all ages across the UK.
Her artwork will now be displayed in this year’s IFAW Animal Action Week Calendar, which goes out to thousands of people across the nation.
She also wins a personally signed print by renowned wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering.
Commenting on Phyl’s success, the UK Director of IFAW, Robbie Marsland, said: “The judges loved Phyl’s beautiful and detailed painting of a young king penguin and parent.
“This popular competition attracted over two hundred entries this year, so gaining a place on the calendar is a considerable achievement”.
Phyl only started painting seriously four years ago, when she enrolled on a three month course at Formby College to learn the basics.
