IN the Don Standing Cup second round, there were two big upsets this week.
Devonshire Club continued their excellent season with a 41-33 defeat of Formby RBL and will meet Sir Henry Segrave in the semi-finals.
John Richards 17 and Ian Jackson 10 led for Devonshire and Molly West 12 and Keith Gowans 11 for the home side.
Cavaliers and Casablanca were level at 39-39 after eight rounds but Cavaliers won the extra round to win 44-41 and will play Wings in the other semi-final.
Paul Edwards 15 led for Cavaliers and Bill Thomas 17 for the visitors. Sir Henry Segrave proved too strong for Baron's Bar in winning 55-28, with Dave Sinclair 18, John Clarke 16 and Harry Owen 14 all scoring well.
All of Wings' players were in double figures with Dag Griffiths 25, Maurice Wright and Tom Farley, both 13, and Bob Parry 11 all scoring well in their 62-22 victory at St Jeromes, with Mike Beckingham 10 leading for the Formby side.
In the Maurice Jefferies Plate, London Boys proved too strong for Ainsdale Sands in winning 37-12, led by good scoring from Ian Wainwright 12 and Alan Wright 10. Despite a fine fine 16 from Steve James, Exams went down to a narrow 31-29 defeat at home to Quads, with Richard Farbon 12 leading for the visitors. Margaret Copplestone and Leon Metford, both 11, led Formby Pavilion to a 37-30 victory over MPs, with Ann Evans 13 leading for the visitors. The semi-final quartet is made up by Southport FC who had a bye.
