WITH phone lines red hot between Blundellsands and Bridge Lane throughout the afternoon the shouts of joy tingled with relief were palpable when news came through that Stockport had beaten Middlesbrough 52-19.
This result ensured National Three North rugby for Waterloo next season and halting a slide that would have seen three relegations in as many seasons.
The final relegation place will now be between Beverley and Middlesbrough who meet at Beaver Park this Saturday.
"This is indeed great news and I am so pleased for the players and all the supporters," said director of rugby Jan Van Deventer.
"At the beginning of the season I thought that 40 points might be enough but this is a very tough league and we needed our 56 just to edge it."
At the turn of the year most commentators could see yet another relegation on the cards but coming out of the bad winter weather Waterloo have been a side transformed and few would deny that they fully deserve their reward.
