FORMBY are facing the prospect of a serious fixture pile-up over the coming months, after yet another Squirrels game fell victim to the weather at the weekend.
Jim Shirley’s men had been scheduled to take on Abbey Hey at Altcar Road on Saturday, but heavy rain during the week meant the pitch was deemed unplayable on the morning of the game. The fixture will now be rescheduled for later in the season.
It is the third game in a row that Formby have seen postponed. Their previous game with Leek CSOB, and before that a midweek clash with Daisy Hill, will also now have to be rescheduled, leaving Shirley and his players playing catch up in the North West Counties First Division.
Incredibly, Formby have managed to play just nine league fixtures so far this season. And though they have won eight of those games, scoring an impressive 35 goals in the process, their inability to fulfil fixtures is hampering their promotion charge.
League leaders AFC Darwen, for example, have played seven games more at this stage. Their lead over Formby is nine points. The likes of Abbey Hey, Ashton Town, West Didsbury & Chorlton and Atherton Colleries have all been able to steal a march also, racking up points while Formby lay dormant.
Nonetheless, Shirley knows his side will go to the top of the table if they can win their games in hand, though they will have their work cut out to do so, as they will in all likelihood need to play two, sometimes three, games per week later in the season.
It is credit to Formby that they remain joint fourth top goalscorers in the division, despite having played significantly fewer games than every other team.
Jason Carey, who has 13 league strikes (and 26 in all competitions) is of course the main reason for this.
Formby’s next scheduled fixture is away to Chadderton this coming Saturday. The Oldham-based side are mid-table currently, but a win could move them to within a point of the Squirrels, who will just be desperate to get a game in.
ALL of Formby Juniors Sports Club’s fixtures were postponed over the weekend after Sefton Council declared their pitches unplayable.
THERE is an outdoors 5-a-side league starting at Formby FC on their new 3G pitches every Monday night between 7-10pm.
Games will be 40 minutes long with FA referees and on-site administrators and places are filling up fast.
