SOUTHPORT Melodic Jazz Club gets its loyal members in the mood for the festive season with its very own yuletide ‘mini-festival’.
The Christmas Special is at the Royal Clifton Hotel on Sunday, December 9.
The music begins at 2pm with the Paul Riley Band. Paul is an accomplished saxophonist who first hit the London scene five years ago and has gathered four other musicians around him.
The Melodic Jazz Club’s London scout was impressed with what he saw when he caught one of Paul’s shows and he has been duly recruited for one his first northern appearances. His show is from 2pm to 4.30pm and an individual ticket is £10.
The Christmas Carvery is a firm favourite with Jazz Club members and this year Zoe Chiotis sings to the accompaniment of Anthony Ormesher from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
Tony is from Liverpool and can also be found among The Magic Hat Ensemble.
They’re not giving too much of the set-list away but expect a touch of Ellington and Porter as you tuck in to your turkey. An individual ticket for this part of the festival is £15.
The Art Trip is the umbrella title for the performance by Alan Barnes with The Craig Milverton Trio which pays homage to the music of West Coast musician Art Pepper.
It’s on from 8pm to 10.30pm and it’s £15 for an individual ticket (£14 for club members).
The day draws to a close from 10.45pm with a late set and party featuring the Andrzej Baranek Trio.
They were a big success at last year’s Manchester Jazz Festival and their up-tempo set will be the ideal way to see the Christmas special out.
A day tickets for all Christmas Special shows are £40 (£39 for Melodic Jazz Club members). B&B rates are available at £32.50 per person (two sharing a twin or double room).
